Subterranean Termites: Damage & Spread
Subterranean termites spread through mud tunnels, these tunnels are made of woods, soil and solid excreta of pest larva. In a span of few days only they cover significant area, One colony merel 60000 insects can cover up till 200 feet.
In case one wants to estimate, how long it takes to damage the home, is that it depends on the size. This may take 3 years to 8 years for significant damage.
When your house has a termite infestation one must take the help of pest control services. Subterranean Termites require moisture to exist and therefore need a wet environment or a source of mist.
Drywood Termites : Damage & Spread
Drywood termites feed on the wood, wood cabinet, door frames, if earl sign of termite infestation is missed, it results in weakening of house structures.
Drywood termites are a species of termites that are not as commonly encountered as subterranean termites but they can be just as damaging if they aren’t detected and treated quickly.
Signs of Drywood termite activity include clicking noises, termite wings, the appearance of “white ants”, hallowed wood, hard-to-close doors and hard-to-open windows, wood tunnels, and frass.
Dampwood Termites : Spread & damage
As the name suggests these types of termite come in contact with wet woods, or woods that are directly in contact with soil. These Dampwood termites do not inhabit soil; instead, these termites reside mainly within the damp wood log
The most important reason of spread of these dampwood termites are poutdoor wooden furniture, Firewoods, left over wooden furniture.
Dampwood termites build their nests out of their own feces. These poop-nests can be detected hardly. A Dampwood nest would smell smokey, in case you start having smoky smell outside our home and you are not able to find any source then think of Dampwood termite infestation.
The termites commonly found are called subterranean termites because they live underground. Termite colonies are highly organized societies of several hundred thousand to 1 million or more individuals within a loose collection of underground tunnels and chambers. Workers (1/8-inch, creamy white, wingless, segmented body, bead-like antennae) are the most numerous members of the colony. They build and maintain the nest, care for the immature, and forage for food to eat and carry back to the nest. Termite food consists of wood and other cellulose products such as paper and cardboard. Reproductive, i.e., queens and kings, produce the new offspring, while soldiers guard the colony from invasion. Swarmers (3/8-inch, straight-sided, black body, silver wings) are male and female adults that emerge from well-established colonies to attempt to establish new colonies.
Termite Control Prevention:
Homeowners who do not want floors drilled and furniture/stored items/carpeting moved are good candidates for baits. Baiting requires fewer disruptions than does conventional barrier treatment. Installation and subsequent monitoring of bait stations generally does not even require the technician to come indoors. Noise, drill dust, and similar disruptions associated with conventional treatment are avoided.
Homeowners who are strongly opposed to the use of pesticides around their home are good candidates for baits. Although conventional liquid termiticides pose no significant hazard to humans, pets or the environment when applied according to label directions, some individuals are still apprehensive. Chemically-concerned homeowners may find the concept of baiting more attractive.
